Car crashes through Subway shop at Apple Valley Mall, killing Woonsocket woman, injuring 4 others

A witness said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed Wednesday when it smashed through the front of the sandwich shop

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — One woman was killed and four people were injured when a car crashed into a Subway sandwich shop Wednesday at the Apple Valley Mall in Greenville, Smithfield police said.

Smithfield police Thursday identified a woman who died at the scene of the crash as Charlotte Vacca, 47, of Woonsocket.

Four of the injured were hospitalized in serious condition, Smithfield Deputy Fire Chief Steven Quattrini said. Two of those injured had been trapped under the car.

The car’s driver, who was also injured in the crash, was transported to Miriam Hospital, police said. Police have not released the driver’s name or said why they think the crash happened.

Smithfield’s police and fire departments found that a car crashed through the east-facing wall of the sandwich shop and passed through the business, stopping only after slamming into a wall shared by a Planet Fitness gym.

A witness said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it smashed through the front of the shop, continued on through the shop and damaged a Planet Fitness, Quattrini told reporters.

The Smithfield Emergency Management and Building Official also responded to the scene. Both the Subway and Planet Fitness are closed until further notice.

Smithfield Police said the incident is being investigated as a motor vehicle accident. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
