Support local farmers in R.I. and head to one of these summer markets

With a rotating selection of vendors, Tiverton’s farmers market offers items like high-quality cuts of fish from Brightside Seafood, microgreens and edible flowers from Coastal Greens, and local eggs from Gnarly Vines Farm.

Events like strawberry socials, classes to learn about herbalism for self-care, and and art shows at the market are posted on their website.

Hope & Main, the prominent food business incubator in the state, begins hosting their weekly Schoolyard summer markets on Wednesday, June 14. Each week, the block party will have a rotating lineup of food and beverage vendors, farmers, and other food producers.

The last market of the year will be Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market is one of the oldest in Rhode Island. Grab juicy apples from the Barden Family Orchard, fresh herbs from the Basil Farm, flowers from Blue Sky Farm, and some fresh eggs from Baffoni’s Poultry Farm. Bakery items from Beans & Buns will also be available.

Providence’s Hope Street Farmers Market has been a farmer- and member-cooperative for more than 30 years. This season, approximately 40 vendors will be participating, from produce growers to purveyors of fresh meats and seafood, coffee, locally packaged foods, and cheeses. Here’s a full list of their vendors, which include Navad Bakery (formerly known as Buns Bakery), Blue Sky Farm, and Farming Turtles.

Guests vendors this summer include Mei Mei Dumplings out of Boston, Rebelle Artisan Bagels from the East Side of Providence, and Shuckologist from North Kingstown.

The African Alliance of Rhode island was established nearly 20 years ago to provide assistance to the growing number of African immigrants and refugees who were settling in Rhode Island. In addition to their literacy and youth programs, they run the six-acre Bami Farm in Johnston, and sell culturally-appropriate fresh crops to pop-up markets around the greater Providence Area. Their markets run from July through November, but each pop-up is at a different location and time. See a list of dates and locations on their website here.

The Aquidneck Community Table’s Growers Market provides seasonal, regionally grown organic and conventional products that include fresh vegetables, cut flowers, herbs, fruit, plants, eggs, breads, baked goods, meats, seafood, cheese, salsa and prepared foods such as soups, vegan foods, and Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern cuisine. Each market features a rotating roster of local artisans and other food businesses.

Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, at Embrace Home Loans Campus, 25 Enterprise Drive, Middletown, Rhode Island. The Wednesday Summer Market will run from 2 to 6 p.m. at 31 Chapel St, Newport, Rhode Island. On July 10, the Monday market will run from 2 to 5 p.m. at Miantonomi Park at 120 Hillside Ave. in Newport, Rhode Island. aquidneckcommunitytable.org.

Mount Hope Farm is a 127-acre historic site, country inn, and event venue. Starting May 15, they’ll open their summer farmers market where they promise a full lineup of vegetables, bread, meats, fish, pastries, and prepared food vendors. Some artisan vendors will be there on a rotating schedule and some weeks will have live music and community programing.

Farm Fresh RI operates a number of farmers markets from West Warwick to Woonsocket that start in the spring and run through the fall. Each market accepts cash, credit and debit cards, EBT, and WIC.

One particular standout market takes place on Saturdays outside the Algonquin House on Broad Street in Providence, a lively morning market known for having a variety of Asian and African vegetables.

The state’s oldest continually operating farmers market, which features locally grown produce, popped kettle corn, fresh cold-pressed juice, and hot cups of coffee is already open for its summer market.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management stands up a farmers market every Friday from May through Columbus Day Weekend. During its first few weeks, the market will primarily offer hanging plants, cut flowers, meat, early vegetable crops, honey, and maple syrup. The traditional local summer crops will become available by mid-June.
